Economy

The Gambian economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. Agriculture plays a key role, with crops such as groundnuts, rice, maize, millet, and other cereals forming the backbone of rural livelihoods. Together, agriculture and fisheries contribute nearly 60% of GDP.

Tourism is one of the country’s most important industries and a major source of foreign exchange, contributing over 16% of GDP and providing employment for more than 10,000 people.

A growing small-scale manufacturing sector produces goods such as plastics and confectionery.
